Aligner refinement is an extra set of aligners made after your initial treatment plan is done, to finish small tooth movements that did not happen exactly as planned. It is a normal part of some clear aligner treatments. It does not mean something went wrong.

What is aligner refinement?
Your treatment plan is a digital 3D planning of how your teeth will move. It uses specialized software and is created by a specialized clinical team of orthodontists who are experienced in clear aligners science. Teeth are living tissue, and they do not always follow the forecast exactly. After your last planned aligner, your doctor checks where your teeth are compared with the plan. If a few small movements are still unfinished, a refinement (a few more sets of aligners) completes them.
A refinement is not starting over again! It builds on the progress you have already made, with a new scan and an updated mini plan for what is left to achieve the perfect results.
Does needing a refinement mean the treatment failed?
Of course not! Refinement is part of how clear aligner treatment is planned for many cases. Some patients finish with their first series, and that is mainly the case with simple cases. Others need a final adjustment to reach the planned result, usually with mild and complex cases. Which one applies to you is decided during your treatment, from your check-ups and scans.
When might you need a refinement?
A refinement may be recommended when, at the end of the first series:
- A small gap has not fully closed
- A tooth has not rotated as far as planned
- A tooth did not follow its aligner closely enough
- Your bite needs a final finishing step
Your doctor decides this after looking at your teeth, not from a fixed rule.
A refinement is also more likely when treatment does not follow the plan day to day:
- Aligners were not worn the full 20 to 22 hours a day
- An aligner was changed late, or a lost or broken one was not replaced quickly
- Follow-up visits were missed

- Wear your aligners 20 to 22 hours a day, and take them out only to eat, brush and floss
- Change to your next aligner on the scheduled day with no delay. You will get reminders through our app.
- Report immediately through our app in case you lose or break your aligners, and never go without them. Our doctor can see your messages on our app 24/7 and will advise you on the spot whether to change to the next aligner or go back to the previous one.
- Attend every follow-up visit that is requested by the dentist, if needed.
- Keep your aligners clean and stored in their case.
